Last summer I asked love to come find me. It grinned and replied for me to wait.
Come autumn it said, and I shall be back. I promise I won’t be late.
Autumn approached with haunting steps, golden leaves pirouetted down invisible
spirals.
Its cool air moved close and reminded me, of the long-awaited arrival.
So once more I asked love to come find me. It giggled and told me to hold on.
Come winter it said, and I shall be back. I promise it won’t be too long.
Winter arrived and offered its cold touch, embedded nature in a white wonderland.
I felt frozen, I admit but I managed, because I knew my wish was close, at hand.
So again, asked love to come find me. It chuckled and replied that I should rest.
Come spring it said, and I shall be back. I promise then to show more interest.
Spring came with green grass, small buds sprung free from the trees,
New signs of life, a new scent, a new breeze.
So, with new hope I asked love to come find me. It laughed and told me to slow down,
Come summer it said, and I shall be back, I promise this time to be around.
I waited for summer, while greenery spread, birds sang with joy as the heat advanced.
I was patient ‘tis true, I held on for you, but soon realized that I stood no chance.
The comprehension carried pain, revealed an unbearable truth.
The time spent had been in vain, I have just wasted my youth.
By the time you’ll be back, to love, this I said.
I fear I’ll already be dead.
You know how much I love this post, right? It’s pithy, eloquent, and so endearing. I love the imagery and the rhyme. Something I have forgotten to do anymore but it’s wonderful to see nevertheless.
